Moving to London: When To Find Housing

Moving to London from abroad, one of the most difficult processes for me was knowing when to search for a property. Properties will not be available to lease too far into the future so starting your search too early will result in a largely fruitless search; however, it is important to avoid delay.

Beyond the general desire to have housing sorted out is the fact that a UK Visa application requires an address. What makes this even more difficult is that the application must be filed out before you can apply for the biometric data recording, which involves a high resolution scan and fingerprinting. For U.S. residents, the biometric data appointment will likely be two weeks after completing the application at which point it is best to allow four weeks for the application to be processed. All told it is best to have your housing arranged seven to eight weeks before you intend to get your visa.
